Gongkwon Yusul is a prime example of respectfulness.

Often new students from other famous mixed martial arts studios, come wanting to train in Gongkwon Yusul. During the sign up I ask "Why did you stop training at the famous studio?" They replied, "I've learned everything they offer"

In Brazilian Jujitsu or MMA, the instructors teach a lot of effective techniques. These techniques are not just for looks they are very applicable techniques that you can use in real life situations. The constant improvement of the techniques due to the influence of the UFC, has put a heavy pressure on the masters and instructors to keep up with the newest trends and to teach it to their students. Fail to do so and you will loose your students to other studios because they want to learn more.

For Example,
In Brazilian Jujitsu, there is no need for association membership and no set curriculum programs exist for the students. It is solely based on the particular Master you happen to train with. The downfall of such practice is that sometimes it takes too long to reach a belt promotion, causing some students to simply move to a different studio for faster belt promotions or to look for better and more knowledgeable master.

These students are not pro soccer or Baseball players. How could this happen?

We cannot call their actions “wrong” simply because these people are so interested in the effective technique and want to spar better. In the end, it comes down to which studio can teach more techniques. I believe this is a problem of culture.

This type of mentality makes Students and Masters relationship very weak.

Instead of wanting to learn a “cool” technique, students need to strive to learn how their instructors trained and try to fully understand the techniques. This way the students can learn more about their instructors or masters and by doing that, students will develop respect and value their Instructors and masters. If students only focus on techniques, the Martial art becomes nothing more than just movements of the body and will loose its real value.

We call our sport coaches “coach ” Not “ Master “ or “Instructor” Martial Art Masters and Instructors are different. Unlike sports, we build a relationship between Masters and students to guide them and to help them in life.

In Gongkwon yusul, students are not allowed to change to another Gongkown Yusul Studio nor can Masters take in other Gongkwon yusul students.

Only way the change of Masters is permitted is by obtaining permission from both Masters with a purpose of only to further your Knowledge in Gongkwon Yusul.

In short term, Gongkwon Yusul is different from regular sports where you are free to make a change anytime you want.

If student gets expelled from any Gongkwon Yusul School, He or she will not be able to train in any other Gongkwon Yusul school anywhere else in the world. No other Gongkwon Yusul Master will take that student in. The student will have to make a choice of either leaving the world of Gongkwon Yusul or begging for forgiveness hoping that the Master will forgive him/her.

The pride of Gongkwon Yusul lies with being able to teach anyone true values of Martial Arts, as well as effective techniques. Still, the relationship between Master and Student is more important.

To all the students of Gongkwon Yusul, get to know your master. Who is your Master? What type of person is he/she? Get to know your Master’s heart. More important than techniques, you must learn your master’s heart. When you do, you will find out that your master will take good care of you and guide you till the end of the time.

My dear brother who has never learned Gongkwon Yusul said,“Prime example of respect is learning from each other during training just like in Gongkwon Yusul.“

This is the absolute truth!!
